Hooker, John. Sermons

Collection History

Please note that as of January 2022, the John Hooker sermons, 1753-1777, and all future digital collections are now hosted on the library's new digital archive.

Rev. John Hooker (1728-1777) originally hailed from Farmington, Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1751. He was ordained as the minister of the First Congregational Church of Northampton in 1753, folliowing the dismissal of the famous Congregationalist Rev. Jonathan Edwards in 1750. He married Sarah Worthington in 1755, and continued as minister at Northampton until he died of smallpox in 1777. The materials in this collection consist of Rev. Hooker's sermons and sermon fragments spanning his entire career at Northampton.

The original manuscripts in this collection are owned by our project partners, the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Further information about the collection can be found in the NEHGS catalog.
