Green, Joshua. Memoranda

Collection History

Please note that as of January 2022, the Joshua Green memoranda, 1768-1775, and all future digital collections are now hosted on the library's new digital archive.

This collection consists of several memoranda notebooks composed by Joshua Green, spanning the years 1768 to 1775. Green (1731-1806) was a Boston merchant, the son of Joseph and Anna Pierce Green. In these notebooks he summarizes local sermons he attended. These consist of a short series of annotations on each sermon, and a header with the date, the name of the preacher, and the relevant bible verse. Although location is not specified, it is likely that most were delivered at Brattle Street Church in Boston, the pastorate of the most frequently cited preacher, Rev. Samuel Cooper (1724-1783).

The original manuscripts in this collection are owned by our project partners, the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Further information about the collection can be found in the NEHGS catalog.

Digital Materials

Memoranda, 1768-1770

This volume of notes on sermons heard by Joshua Green over three years includes a summary of sermons by various preachers, with most delivered by Rev. Cooper of Brattle Street Church. There are also occasional notes about local deaths and other noteworthy events. At the end of the first year, Green cites the total number of sermons he heard, how many were preached by each minister, and the liturgical occasion of each. At the end of each subsequent year, he includes an index with biblical citations for the subjects of Rev. Cooper's sermons.

Memoranda, 1771

This volume continues Green's records of sermons he attended. He cites the name of the minister, the date of the sermon, and the text, as well as some notes on deaths and other topics. An index is included with a list of ministers and the number of sermons preached by each, and a separate listing of citiations for Rev. Cooper's sermons.

Memoranda, 1772

This volume continues Green's records of sermons he attended, with the name of the minister, the date of the sermon, and the text. He also includes a general index to 1773 with a listing of biblical citations, which was later transcribed into the following book.

Memoranda, 1773-1774

This volume continues Green's records of sermons he attended over a two-year span. The notes include the name of the minister, the date of the sermon, and the text, as well as some notes on deaths and other topics. An index at the end of each year lists the biblical citations for all of the sermons by Rev. Cooper. The end of the volume also includes a "general index" of all of the citations for the sermons for 1774 and 1775.

Memoranda, 1775

This volume concludes Green's records of sermons he attended, with the name of the minister, the date of the sermon, and the biblical citation. The volume also includes some brief notes on baptisms, deaths, and other topics.
