Abstract:

Collection was donated by the authors, probably in the 1970s. Records document the couple's work in India as Missionaries with the ABCFM and then later when Loy Long was Personnel Secretary for the United Church Board for World Ministries.

Biographical Information

Obituary notice from United Church of Christ's Whole Earth Newsletter, Spring 1979, p 14-15:

Loy L. Long, former missionary in India (1931-1945, 1949-1956) and staff member ABCFM and UCBWM (1945-1948, 1956-1968) died April 20, 1979 in Newton, Massachusetts at the age of 76.

Mr. Long was a social and industrial welfare worker in Ahmednagar. He organized the Probation and After-Care Association and served for two years as secretary. Mr. and Mrs. Long started the sisal fibre industry which has given regular and seasonal employment to hundreds in the area. They returned to the United States and Mr. Long served as Candidate Secretary with the ABCFM in Boston. Mr. Long was director of the Nagpada Neighborhood House in Bombay when he returned to India. The Longs left India in 1956 and Mr. Long served as Personnel Secretary for the ABCRM and UCBWM until his retirement.

Surviving is his wife, Edna (Wellesley, MA), two daughters, Joan Holmes (Westmoreland, NH) and Carol Steele (Concord, MA) and a son, Delmar (Rock Hill, SC). [All specific addresses redacted]

Papers relating chiefly to the missionary work of Loy and Edna Margaret (Johnson) Long (1906-?), for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in India, and to Loy Long's service as personnel secretary of the Board o and its successor, the United Church Board for World Ministries.
