Historical Note

The church was gathered December 10, 1823 as the Evangelical Congregational Church at Fourth Street, near C Street. In 1825 the congregation moved to a small brick church building at the corner of Broadway and A Street. The name was changed to Phillips Church February 10, 1835; in 1836 a new and larger building was built at the same location. In 1858 this building was sold and a new building was started at Broadway, near Dorchester Street; this building was completed in September 1859. In September 1883 Phillips Chapel was dedicated at E. 7th, near I Street; in 1948 the building at the corner of Broadway and A Street was sold. During the years 1948 - 1954 the congregation worshipped at the Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Silver Street and Dorchester Street; the church held separate Sunday School and church services, but joined with the Presbyterian congregation for Sunday evening and prayer meetings.

November 21, 1954 the church purchased a building at Atlantic and Fourth Street. In 1983 the church purchased the building at 381 W. Broadway, near E Street; the building was named the Winipress Christian Resource Center. The church was listed as a Schedule II church from 1961 - 1964 and was a member of the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference from 1960 on. Church extant in 1996.

Scope and Content Note

All but one of the record books are manuscript copies of the original records. There are some photographs of ministers and images of the church buildings inserted in the volumes; these photographs must be sleeved in Mylar envelopes. There are two scrapbooks that contain miscellaneous printed material pertaining to the history of the church e.g., orders of worship, clippings, etc. The items are pasted into the center of the volume and cloth pieces fold around the outside edges of the volume.
