Planned Giving and Bequests
The Tappan Society was established in memory of two great financial benefactors with a passion for social justice. In the 1840s and 1850s, merchants Arthur and Lewis Tappan represented the best of the Congregational tradition, funding the work of abolitionists and personally sponsoring the 1841 rescue of Amistad captives in 1841. Members of the Tappan Society who have identified gifts or bequests to the library in their estate planning are recognized in the Annual Report and invited to occasional special events.
